School Uniforms

Children at Suango getting uniform deliveries... Hats, bags, satchels and tops
Children at Suango getting uniform deliveries… Hats, bags, satchels and tops

Uniforms in Vanuatu are a luxury item making it difficult for many of the parents to purchase a uniform for their children. In May, SHaRM foundation member Robin worked with PSW (a school and sports uniform manufacturer based in Melbourne, Australia) who donated their excess stock to SHaRM for distribution of school clothing items to the kids of Vanuatu.

This project is ongoing and included the distribution of uniforms to schools in the outer islands, a new uniform for 74 students at Amapelao School on Malo Island who have no uniform and a full uniform for the Ministry of Education Tennis Clinic for 100 junior members.

The donation of excess uniforms equates to approximately 30,000 items of school and sports uniforms, school bags and sunhats.

Transport of the items has been the challenge for SHaRM with some items being provided by some of the Air Vanuatu pilots coming back from Australia. We are now fundraising in order to pay for a shipping container to be sent from Australia to Port Vila.

Welcome to SHaRM Foundation

On the night of March 13th 2015, Super Cyclone Pam hit the island nation of Vanuatu. Made up of 100 small islands, Vanuatu is the home of 250,000 people, many of whom live in traditional villages. Imagine being up all night as winds of 250kms pound your house and that of your neighbours. In the morning you go outside to find that somehow your house is still standing but those of your friends and family have literally ‘blown away’. No pots or pans; no knives and forks; no plates or cups. Your local school or kindy is now just a concrete slab without walls, roof, desks, chairs or books. This is what many people in Vanuatu faced in March. As a result, it is SHaRM’s objective to rebuild schools so that all children can gain access to an education. We are committed to helping this small island nation rebuild after cyclone Pam.
