Vila North School Re-roofed two classrooms – Feb 2016

Final Reporting

Post-Pam April 2015

Following a request by Cyrille Mainguy, for assistance to view and help rebuild two classrooms at Vila North School, SHaRM Pikinini Ecole Foundation member, Stuart Friend, inspected the buildings on 3rd December 2015 which coincided with a delivery of books from Air Vanuatu’s Sydney collector and other resources provided to the School Headmistress, Elian Klan. Stuart was able to check on the school and its current requirements.

Our project working group under the guidance of project manager Cyrille Mainguy, together with usual donors being BlueScope Lysaght, Vila Distribution (Hardware), Port Vila Hardware, and SHaRM, were able to coordinate and arrange the ordering, purchase and delivery of the materials required to repair and refurbish these two classrooms over the Christmas 2015-2016 period and during summer recess.

SHaRM Pikinini Ecole Foundation confirmed late in November 2015 to allocate funding towards this project given some 700 plus students attend this school which followed our on- site classrooms inspection by Stuart Friend on 3rd December 2015 and again on 18th December 2015. SHaRM were advised that both classrooms were in a very poor condition. Along with reroofing and truss strengthening, the old flooring tiles needed to be removed, walls painted, louvers repaired and/or replaced, doors and blackboards mended or repaired and a new verandah installed so the classrooms were ready to resume on 8th February 2016.

Refurbishment commenced on 11th January 2016

SHaRM member, Stuart Friend, coordinated a team of workers together with a crew of 10 helpers provided by Vila North School to undertake the removal of the old roof and this work commenced work on 11th January 2016. This crew included workers from Mele, team leader Michele with four other workers.

The project at Vila North was professionally overseen by a qualified tradesman, Shannon Barabski from Prolink Plumbing & Gas Fitting, who supervised all the repairs and reinstallation of colour steel long run generously provided by BlueScope Lysaght via their assistance to school refurbishment scheme following Cyclone PAM. The work required insulation to be obtained and this donation was coordinated by Shannon who obtained 5 rolls of insulation blanket via VATE Industries. The insulation was generously donated by Thomas Monvoisin from VATE Industries sufficient to complete the job at Vila North.

The interior painting and floor cleaning was required to remove all the old and damaged tiles which was a major undertaking. The repainting was supported with funding from  Byond Disaster Relief NZ and Australia who were onsite during the refurbishment week in January 2016. Byond’s funding enabled the purchase of interior wall and floor paint sufficient to complete the interiors of these two classrooms and provide the classrooms with a bright new finish.

The classrooms were ready for class commencement on 8th February 2016 despite the windows not being finished.

TIDY UP JOBS IN FEBRUARY 2016

SHaRM Foundation members undertook a further inspection of the two classrooms at the end of January 2016 and confirmed that it would allocate further funding to complete the window issue so as to provide security and weatherproofing for these two classrooms with the installation of louvers and glass, where required.

Funding was allocated to purchase sufficient new galleries to reinstate all windows. SHaRM have been assisted with a generous donation of glass from VGA Glass and Aluminium and we wish to record our thanks to Damien Smith and his team for providing the glass, the last item to complete this refurbishing project.

This work was completed on the weekend of 27th February 2016. The classrooms will be officially handed back to the school at a small function on 4th March 2016 organised by the school.

Welcome to SHaRM Foundation

On the night of March 13th 2015, Super Cyclone Pam hit the island nation of Vanuatu. Made up of 100 small islands, Vanuatu is the home of 250,000 people, many of whom live in traditional villages. Imagine being up all night as winds of 250kms pound your house and that of your neighbours. In the morning you go outside to find that somehow your house is still standing but those of your friends and family have literally ‘blown away’. No pots or pans; no knives and forks; no plates or cups. Your local school or kindy is now just a concrete slab without walls, roof, desks, chairs or books. This is what many people in Vanuatu faced in March. As a result, it is SHaRM’s objective to rebuild schools so that all children can gain access to an education. We are committed to helping this small island nation rebuild after cyclone Pam.
